The Importance Of Teaching Children To Swim

we

It goes without saying that one of the most important life skills that you can teach your child is swimming. Quite apart from the obvious benefits of fitness and fun, is one of personal safety when around water.  Whether you’re at a pool, by a river, or by the sea, knowing the basics of swimming & water safety could potentially save your life if you get into difficulty.

From a very young age a great way of introducing your baby to the water is your bath at home, and because of this BabyDam are huge supporters of Water Babies and the admirable work that they do for children all over the world. Water Babies have been teaching babies & toddlers to swim & learn life skills since 2002. They recognised the importance of teaching children at a very young age to swim and how beneficial it can be for them in the long run. For Water babies ‘there’s no greater thrill than seeing a baby move freely, gracefully and confidently through water in a way they physically can’t manage on dry land’.

Teaching lessons up and down the country, and the Water Babies classes that are run all over the world, they teach children of all ages the importance of swimming whilst incorporating lots of fun and bonding. Teaching a child how to swim is about removing the fears they may have about water and making them grow into a fully fledged water baby! Teaching your child how to swim is a priceless activity that will stay with them for the rest of their life, an invaluable skill that should never be discounted.

Water babies have a wealth of experience in teaching children to swim, and their professionalism in all classes is honourable, no one works harder than them to help make sure you and your little one feel safe in the water.  Additionally all of their classes are done in a lovely environment that isn’t daunting for yourself or your child. All of the classes are run in pools that are heated to a minimum of 32 degrees and classes are kept small so there will always be plenty of guidance and attention for all the children.  Swimming from babyhood is a beautiful journey for all to partake in, and you’ll be amazed at how quickly they can pick up kicking, floating and having fun in the water! If you’re looking to introduce your little one to swimming you can find your nearest Water Babies class here.

10 Top Tips For Bathing Your Baby

adorable-20374_640Bathing a newborn baby for the first time can be a nerve wracking experience, as it always is for babies and young children of all ages. With so many things to remember, and with so many questions that it poses – ‘how hot should a baby bath be?’ ‘How do I wash my baby?’, It can be overwhelming and lead to mistakes if you forget to slow down, think about what you’re doing and relax. We reached out to some mums on twitter this week who have helped us compile some of the top 10 tips for bathing your baby. This isn’t an exhaustive list but contains some of the most important ones that will help make your baby, and your life much easier!

#1. The baby bath

Most parents aren’t actually aware that a BabyDam can be used from the outset with a newborn baby, with no need to use a traditional baby bath. BabyDam can be positioned anywhere in the bath according to your babies size. However, when bathing a baby safety is the most important factor and not necessarily the bath tub that you choose to use. But a BabyDam will grow with your baby meaning you don’t have to spend money on extra baths as your baby grows, and long gone will be the days of having to bend down to fill the bath up and empty it afterwards. With a BabyDam in one place you can then have the towel and other essential items next to it in the bath within easy reach, meaning less bending over and an all round quicker bathing time for baby!

#2.  Temperature

Once decided on the baby bath, this leads on to the whole process of bathing your baby which poses the question for what the right temperature should be. Always put cold water in first and add warm water afterwards, the temperature should always be tested with your elbow first to ensure that it is the right temperature. There isn’t a specific guideline for the correct temperature, it shouldn’t be too hot but it should be a comfortable temperature for the baby to bath in.

#3. Capacity of the bath

Arguably, this is amongst the three top key tips for bathing your baby safely. Again, there isn’t a correct answer here but it is recommended that the amount of water in the bath should be between 2 – 3 inches deep. This way the baby keeps warm but you can still pour water gently over its body.

#4. HOLD ON!

Whatever age your baby is and whatever depth the bath, keep hold of your baby! This tip goes without saying, but it’s something that you can never become complacent or get distracted with. As well as holding your baby securely, ensure that their head and ears are above the water.

#5. Have everything to hand

Before you start bathing your baby, make sure all the essentials and towels are within reach so you don’t have to leave the bathroom or get distracted trying to hunt something down. With everything in one place, baby will get bathed faster and keep warm throughout.

#6. Washing baby

Holding your baby securely in one hand, use your free hand to wash baby. Most parents usually start to wash babies face first and then onto dirtier areas of the body. Ensuring that you clean all of the creases in the body and hard to reach areas. This can be done by using a soft sponge or wash mitt.

#7. Soap

It’s actually completely fine to wash a newborn with just plain water, however if necessary use a mild, perfume free soap but avoid bubble baths or anything scented. As babies get older, you can be more experimental with specific baby and child ranges of soap and bubbles that are on the market.

#8. Warm hoody towel

Babies can get a bit shivery after a bath and there isn’t anything nicer than wrapping them up in a warm and cosy towel which makes baby feel safe and secure.

#9. Essential supplies

For when babies bath is over you want all of the essentials to hand so you can quickly get them dried, moisturised, nappy on etc to stop them from getting cold. Think about everything you will need beforehand and store it all in a handy box that is within reach of the bath.

#10. Baby Massage

After a bath, babies are at their most relaxed state and this is the best time to give your baby a little massage. Use a comfy and soft change mat like our BabyDam ChangeMat for a really snuggly massage , just before bed time this will help your baby sleep well and easily. However, avoid using any oils and lotions until baby is 1 month or older, and when you do use mild and non-scented solutions.

Once you’ve got the right equipment and the know how you’ll be able to bath your baby with ease, without any worries or anxieties. Knowing how to bath baby becomes a much more relaxing experience for the both of you! Do you have any other tips for bathing a baby? Why every parent needs a BabyDam

oraAt face value the main selling point for a BabyDam is the amount of water you will save over the years, the savings in water and energy alone means that the BabyDam does pays for itself over and over! Many parents have used BabyDam continually with additional children as they arrive, we’ve experienced customers who have used BabyDam for up to five years with three different children! With providing parents with the solution that they have all been looking for, but there really are many more advantages of the BabyDam  that help make parents life that bit easier! Here are some of the top reasons why every parent needs a BabyDam!

Keeping your child away from those pesky taps – The BabyDam can be positioned at either end of the bath, many children are drawn towards playing with the taps which can be a major danger hazard for all ages. By positioning the BabyDam and blocking off the taps you are already preventing a potential accident, the portion of the bath can then be filled up with a shower head, or jugs of water.

BabyDamMaking the transition to a family sized bath – After a child spends months in a tiny baby bath which they then outgrow, being placed into a family sized bath can cause them to have an  inexplicable fear of getting into the bath. The bath seems huge and scary to what was a cosy and small area to sit in. As mentioned previously, the BabyDam can be placed anywhere in the bath, and which becomes synonymous with babies at bath time once they get used to it. Allowing them to become used to a full sized bath, yet within a smaller cosy area of it. The BabyDam also allows you to increase babies bath size, as they grow accordingly.

BabyDamStopping those toys from floating away – The BabyDam helps to keep all of babies toys in one place, without the fear of them floating off and your baby trying to reach them.  After running our #smileforeaster competition on twitter we discovered that one of the most common reasons for wanting a BabyDam was to stop their childs toys floating away!

SAVING WATER – Last but not least is the main reason that the BabyDam was invented, and the main reason why people purchase a BabyDam. For what is sometimes only 10 minutes of fun for baby at bath time, the BabyDam saves a huge amount of water, by filling up only the area that you need. Having a smaller, more concentrated area not only keeps the bath water warmer for longer but it’s eco friendly and stops waste when so many others don’t have enough. Due to filling a much smaller area of the bath it halves the amount of time you usually spend waiting to fill the bath. It saves, water, energy, time and money! The four things most parents never have enough of – but with the BabyDam we are changing things for the better!

saveWe could list the endless advantages of having a BabyDam, but we might be here all day! BabyDam really is the solution that all parents have been looking for, and we have been helping parents all over the world for a number of years. The BabyDam from a mummy bloggers point of view

isling

We love reading reviews of our BabyDam and what our customers think about the product, whether that’s in an email, a tweet, Facebook message or a blog post. UK mummy blogger Islington Mama wrote a fab review of the BabyDam on her blog. She said that from the outset of using it in her bath they found two main advantages of using the BabyDam,  ‘We use far less water these days; and the bab can grab her toys without them disappearing off to the other end of the bathtub!’. As you can see from the adorable picture, she is still enjoying being in a family sized bath but within a cosy area of it and within reach of her bath toys.
mamaShe praises how easy the BabyDam is to set up, ‘The Dam is easy to install or remove in 3 seconds flat, and so far has been very reliable’. With the summer holidays also fast approaching there is no need to worry about leaving the BabyDam at home, as ‘it lies flat when not in use, so could even be put in the bottom of a suitcase if you really can’t live without it on holiday’. As demonstrated below the BabyDam fits perfectly in the bottom of an overnight bag, it weighs very little and travels easily by train, plane or car!

The Islington Mama thinks that ‘The Baby Dam is such a great concept, and has since been raving about it to all of her friends with littlies’. You can read her full review of the BabyDam here.
