With the temperatures continuing to rise in the UK and the impending arrival of hosepipe bans, we’re all being actively encouraged to start saving water in the home. Changing the way we think and our habits about water is no easy feat, but the good news is there are plenty of easy ways that we can start.
We challenge you to pick at least one of our A-Z water saving tips a week to stick to. Saving water really is as easy as ABC…
A – void using sprinklers. Use a watering can instead or reuse the water from a water butt if you have one. If you don’t, it’s probably about time that you invest in one.

C – heck your property regularly for leaks, leaks can become the single most expensive and water waster if undetected.

E – veryone can get involved in saving water in the home. Adopting one new water saving tip each week can help us to cut money on our water bills and conserve our precious water supplies.
F – ill up a jug of water and keep it in the fridge so you don’t have to lose gallons of water down the drain whilst you are waiting for the tap water to cool down. It’s a great time saver too and as the UK heatwave continues, there really isn’t anything as refreshing as an ice cold drink.
G – roup your house plants together with the same watering needs. A fab tip is plant bath time, put them all into the bath and water and preen them all at the same time.
H – ave you accidentally dropped ice cubes on the floor or in the sink? Don’t leave them! Drop them into a house plant instead that will be grateful for the extra water!
I – nstall a save a flush bag in your toilet and you’ll save up to one litre of water per flush.
J – ust remember to switch off your taps and water supply when you go on holiday, in the event of a leak you won’t literally be watching your money and water going down the drain.
K – ids should be rewarded for the water saving tips they follow, such as turning the tap off when brushing their teeth. Encouraging good water saving habits when they are younger will help them to be more mindful about water usage as they get older.
L – ook for watersense labelled toilets and faucets when purchasing for a new bathroom. A water saving device that will easily help you save water and money in your home or workplace.
M – eter your water. Installing a water meter in your home is the easiest way to watch your water consumption and to help reduce your water bill. It’s a win win all round.
N – o additional watering is usually required for already established shrubs and trees, hurray!
O – only use the dishwasher and washing machine when it has a full load. Nowadays, modern dishwashers only use 10-15 litres of water per wash.
P – et water that is warm shouldn’t be thrown out, reuse it around the garden and fill up the bowl with fresh and clean water for your pet.
Q – uestion your colleagues or company about whether they have water saving initiatives in place already, and if not ask if you/they can create them. Don’t forget we spend half of our day at work, so we want to be putting our water saving skills to use outside of our homes too.
R – euse leftover water from cooked or steamed food for use around your garden or even to start making a nutritious soup from scratch.
S – horter showers. Every minute less spent in a power shower will save 17 litres of water per person, per day.
T – urn off your taps when brushing your teeth, you could save up to 200 gallons of water PER month when turning the tap off.
U – se only what you need in the kettle. Fill your kettle up mug by mug and either reuse the leftover water again or use the water for watering plants.
V – egetables should be washed in a bowl rather than under a running tap, the water can then be used for house plants or in the garden.
W – ater butt. If the UK is renown for anything then it’s the rainfall! Once installed, a water butt will collect your rainwater, ready to be reused around your garden. Hose? What hose?
X – eriscape will help you landscape your garden specifically for water conservation, clever, huh? The general idea is that the plants in your garden will need less water and you can also use certain objects for decorative effect such as benches and gravel.
Y – ou. Everything starts with yourself and becoming more mindful about water is the first step to employing water saving tips in your home and daily life.
